Hurst Peirce + Malcolm LLP were asked by the John Lewis Partnership to provide civil and structural services for the construction of the new Waitrose supermarket at Malvern. The supermarket is built into the side of a steep hill which required major earthworks and retaining walls (see small photo).
The supermarket comprises a 2500 m2 retail floor with adjacent car parking over 1350 m2 of warehousing and offices and a 750 m2 covered unloading bay in a semi-basement partly below the store and partly below the car park. The retail floor is reinforced concrete supported on a steel frame. The roof over the sales floor is supported on four main internal columns. There is also a large covered plant area at roof level (main photo). The store is set within a cut in the hillside which also provided room for a 300 space car park.
The client wished to maximise the size of the store on what was a very difficult site, at the same time as providing easy access for customers in their cars and HGV lorry deliveries.
