Caroline House

HPM LLP was appointed as consulting structural engineers in respect to the design of a high-end penthouse apartment above an existing 1960’s concrete/masonry building located in a prime location in Central London. The project entailed the construction of a single storey steel frame supported on a steel grillage on padstones which were located on top of existing columns.

Works were carried out while the apartments on the lower floors were occupied. Site storage was minimal thus extensive planning was carried out such that construction materials were delivered to site as and when they were required.

Our brief also included the following:

- Design of a garage extension. Due to the discovery of tree roots under the proposed location of the garage, a suspended slab construction was adopted in order to preserve the roots.

- Extension of an existing lift shaft into the penthouse apartment.
